Hiking Moeciu Area – a chance to practice ecotourism

Hiking Moeciu Area is a form of ecotourism. According to the UNWTO’s definition, “Ecotourism is a form of tourism in which the main motivation of the tourist is the observation and appreciation of nature and local traditions related to nature.” According to the Romanian Ecotourism Association (AER), ecotourism groups together a wide range of activities based on nature or local culture in areas within or near protected natural areas.

These include: hiking, flora and fauna observation, cycling, horse riding, cultural tours, water activities, winter activities (ski touring, snowshoeing, sleigh rides), photo tours or gastronomic tourism. In other words, something for everyone.

In the Bran-Moieciu area there are 9 ecotourism trails.They are circular trails, lasting between 2h (the shortest) and 4-5h (the longest).

They are fairly easy and can be walked by almost anyone who feels like a bit of a walk. They are also accessible in all seasons.

Do I need special equipment when Hiking Moeciu Area?

Yes, and no. You don’t necessarily need special mountain boots, because some trails are extremely easy, they feel like walking. But some waterproof and mud-proof (especially if you go in spring or autumn) or snow-proof (in winter) boots are useful.

Hiking Moeciu AreaIt’s also a good idea to dress in layers. Because of the effort, you’ll most likely get hot while moving. But when you stand still or get to the top of a hill (where it’s likely to be windy) you need to put on an extra layer. Even in summer it is recommended to have a windstopper jacket.

Carry plenty of water or, if you go in winter, a thermos to fill with hot tea. Don’t forget something to eat either. Sandwiches, granola bars, oilseeds or anything else that can give you a little energy when you need it.

What else do I need to know about the area?

The Transylvanian commune of Moeciu (also known in official documents as „Moieciu”) is a collection of villages that stand out for their style and tourist attractions. More precisely, it comprises the villages of Cheia, Drumul Carului, Moeciu de Sus, Moeciu de Jos, Peștera and Măgura.

Moeciu is the link between Ardeal and Wallachia. Perhaps that’s why it has been visited by foreign tourists for many years – about 30% of them, according to the local town hall. Why do tourists come to Moeciu? For rest, nature, specific gastronomy, Hiking Moeciu Area and the short distances to the sights.
